Subsequently, the new Church began construction on the southern edge of Pondicherry Town in 1902, with the assistance of the Parish Priest of the Cathedral, Rev. Fr. Fourcaud, and Rev. Fr. Telesphore Welter, Parish Priest of Nellithope.
Mgr. Gandhi blessed the church and conducted the first Holy worship in the western wing of the current church on December 17, 1907. Furthermore, the new parish that surrounded the church was founded on January 27, 1908.
Over the years, twenty Parish Priests have provided leadership for this basilica. Notable developments of this Church over the past fifty years include the Adoration Chapel, Parish Hall, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, and the new Parish Community Hall.
