Sports and fitness enthusiasts from various corners converged to participate in the 14th edition of the Auroville Marathon, held across different distance categories on Sunday.
As the popularity of the marathon soared, becoming one of Auroville’s flagship events, the organizational challenges also intensified in tandem with the increasing number of participants. This year, the “Run for the Joy of Running” marathon saw over 3,000 registered runners, including more than 650 women.
To ensure the smooth conduct of the event, extensive arrangements were made, including the deployment of police personnel, coordination of internal vehicular traffic, and staffing of aid stations with medical professionals to handle emergencies. A workforce of approximately 500 volunteers was also mobilized to oversee various aspects of the marathon.
Participants came from cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, along with a significant turnout from Auroville and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The total number of runners was estimated to be around 5,000, according to Auroville.
Jayanti S. Ravi, Secretary of Auroville Foundation, ceremoniously flagged off each race and greeted the finishers at the Football Ground, marking the culmination of the marathon.
Among the dedicated participants was Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, who completed his 150th marathon during the event, added a special touch to the occasion.
The marathon featured multiple distance segments, including the full marathon (42.195 km/26.219 miles), half marathon (21.0975 km/13.1094 miles), and a 10k run. Additionally, several school children from Auroville joined their families and friends in the 5 km open run/walk.
Since its inception in 2008, the Auroville Marathon has been organized by Auroville Runners in collaboration with the Auroville community. Originally conceived to celebrate Auroville’s 40th anniversary, the event’s inclusive spirit has attracted participants from across cities, turning it into an annual tradition. Notably, the marathon remains non-commercial, focusing solely on the joy of running, with no prize money for winners and no official timing recorded, as affirmed by Auroville.
