Pondicherry’s Bandh: Women’s Day Turns Protest into a Platform for Change

Share Our Post

India has a significant number of children, and far too many continue to face the threat of abuse. This reality casts a long shadow over our nation’s progress. International Women’s Day traditionally celebrates the achievements of women’s and girls. However, in the wake of the horrific abuse of 9-year-old Arthi, Pondicherry will observe a different kind of day this year.

Arthi’s case is a heartbreaking symbol of the ongoing struggle for women’s and children’s safety in India. While we celebrate women reaching new heights and achieving equality, the lack of strong laws and effective action against abuse exposes a critical vulnerability.

Despite advancements in technology, India’s progress on women’s and child safety remains unacceptably slow. Reports of abuse continue at an alarming rate. We diligently teach children about “good touch” and “bad touch,” but a crucial piece of the puzzle is missing: a fundamental shift in societal attitudes.

We need a big change in how people think. Shouldn’t we also teach men how to treat women and children with respect? Shouldn’t our communities never allow abuse to happen?

In light of these recent events, Pondicherry will hold a bandh (shut down) on International Women’s Day (8 March 2024). This day serves not just as a day of reflection on Arthi’s case, but as a powerful call for action. It’s a day to demand justice for Arthi and for all victims of abuse. It’s a day to demand better from our lawmakers and law enforcement.

Let us honor Arthi’s memory by making her story a catalyst for change.

Together, let’s make our voices heard. Let’s ensure Arthi’s story doesn’t become another statistic. Let’s create a Pondicherry where all children and women feel safe.
